.

A task I had to do for my Uni course today.

Whilst for most, listening to a continual array of songs over a period that may last from 1 hour to 3 or 4 hours may seem like torture. For myself and many Smidgem readers, it is a tool that plays and pulls on feelings and emotions and can even dictate your overall mood and outlook on certain things.

If you are unfamiliar with what I am referring to, it is the modern form of publishing that goes by the name of Podcasting. Amongst todays cut throat electronic music market, getting your name out there can prove to be a difficult task. And podcasting has undeniably been a major stepping-stone for many established artists today.

A vast majority or people who listen to podcasts or (mixes) will often hold down the skip button and cut to the songs that are most familiar to them And if you had to ask me I would say this defeats the whole purpose of the podcast . If this is the case, you should just listen to the song on its own.

Here’s an example. You pick up a magazine and find an interesting article, now as you read the first few sentences you get impatient and briefly flick over the piece and only read what sounds interesting for yourself. Now if I was to ask you questions about the article and get you to tell me what it was about you would only be tell me bits and pieces and more than likely give a distorted impression of what the author is trying to say.So in other words you have missed the whole point and direction of the article. So next time your listening to a mix, even if you don’t like the sound or feel of a certain track, just stick it out ,because there is a good chance that its been put in the mix to alter or create the mood on the dancefloor or in your head.

If you missed them for some stilly reason, heres the links to some mixes from the Smidgem writers.

Thrusher & Rampant -Touch & Go Mix.

My favorite to this day is Justices 2008 X-mas mix, rejected by Fabric for some obscure reason. This is a true music rollercoaster.

Beat The Weekend part. 11

It has been way too long since the last beat the weekend so I'm going to double up the post size and throw in tunes from a whole range of genres..

First up LA Riots layed hands to Soulwax's epic track 'miserable girl'. They didnt tweak it too much which i really liked, just enough to make it pop (again)

Tho original of this has been doing the rounds for a while now and ive constantly been wondering when some solid remixes of it will come out. Both of these are awesome

I love everything Uffie. She seems to make everything sound so dirty. Far Too Loud have gone out of thier way to make this even dirtier. The dancefloor will absoultely erupt when this gets dropped. Mark my words!

This track has been kicking round for a while now but only really came to my attention when Wolfgang Gartner dropped on his Radio One mixtape. The best thing about this is that it's by two local Sydney siders Tommy Trash and Tom Piper. Really really good production and a classic anthem. We'll be hearing this for years to come!

Hopefully you all got well and truly hooked on Belzebass' soundcloud, I know i was stuck there for a couple of hours. Here's another thumper from the italian pair.

I have completley fallen in love with this track. Martin Solveig killed it by sourcing Dragonette for the vocals. Her voice is amazing, she sounds so hot!

And of course it wouldn't be weekend with out some fresh dubstep. I've been hanging out for the release of this since i saw footage of Rusko drop this at some major festival. Sent the crowd in to a frenzy. "Let the bass cannon kick it"

The Subs - The Face Of The Planet

‘The Face of the Planet’ is the opening track and first single of The Subs’ freshly squeezed full album ‘DECONTROL’ that will be released on Lektroluv end of March.
The single will be out 7th of March. Having being remixed by so many big wigs its hard to pick a favourite. I think
Gtronic takes the cake but!! The Subs weaved all the remixes together in this mashup.

Belzebass

Belzebass are two stupid producers who like/love to play heavy shit! Influences : indie electro - weed - electrotrash - heavy wobbling bass - deathcore - dislessia - distorted bass - vagina - sidechain massacre. Thier remix that just got put on thier soundcloud yesterday of DJ Antention's 'Ivan' is in a league of its own. With distorted bass, dubstep and eclectic synth stabs. Due to be released on TUFFEM UP! Records this is definitly one that I'll be counting down the days till i can get my grubby little hands on it. The duo will be hitting Australian shores on the 4th March for a 2 week tour. Check thier myspace for all the dates..

Here is more gold from the boys. Most of this stuff is available at Beatport too so be sure to check it out and purchase it!!

Team Wing

Its always good to support the local up and coming aussies. Team Wing have been turning heads for a while now with thier DJ sets, especially in thier home town of Canberra. The boys have been busy in the studio aswell, having already released an EP (which you can grab in the iTunes store) and having a slew of remixes under the belt. Here's a couple that really caught my attention.

The boys were featured in the 'Local Love' post a short while back. Read more about them and grab some more tracks here.

Like A G6

I just got a hold of this edit of 'Like a G6' yetserday. The original is by the LA based Far East Movement. Sydney siders Matt Nukewood and E-Cats (aka Stacey Butler) teamed up to bring the rain with thier remix. It starts off with a fun and bouncy bassline with awesome vocals then morphs into a bit of dubstep (probably due to Stacey being one half of dubstep outfit Glove Cats) Definitly a huge weapon for the DJs out there!

February’s Bangin!

Yo!
I wrote a massive post a couple weeks back.
But I was so busy, I never got round to settin up the mp3’s & posting it…
And now it all seems irrelevant! (don’t you hate that??)
So here’s my second attempt at my February contribution!

Bassjackers anyone?!
They’re touring Aus very soon. Bunch of dates, check their page; …http…
Of late, have been making some epic Electro/Dutch bangers, but my fav by far is an older tune, from their collab with Apster; Klambu.

Bassjackers & Apster - Klambu (Original Mix)
Mad Bouncy Conga house, with awesome percussion samples.

More recently they remixed Martin Solveig’s track Hello ft. Dragonette, which has been going big in the club charts. Not my fav, but people seem to froth!;
Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette - Hello (Bassjackers Remix)

& do get your hands on this one. Stupidly fat bangin Dutch house.
Quintino - I Feel (Bassjackers Remix).mp3

In other news Canberra’s main man Franky ‘Offtapia’ launched his label ‘Tap’d Out Records’ Ft. ‘Peking Duk’s’ – ‘Style’ EP @ Academy, on the weekend.
‘What So? Not’ & ‘Kyro & Bomber’ all down for the party, as well having remix’s featured on the record.

Beataucue Monthly Mixtape #4

Those damn Frenchies have done it again, BeatauCue are back with the fourth instalment of their monthly mix series. Sticking with tradition this is full of upcoming bass heavy releases that make this an hour of awesomeness that can not be overlooked, a must have for download. (Click the little arrow on the side of the player)

BeatauCue monthly mix #4 "The Furie Issue" - February 2011 by BeatauCue

About 31minutes in they play their latest remix, which is of Yelle's new single Safari Disco Club....this song had me jumping around so hard I nearly knocked my computer over....the second drop is just insane!...I can't wait to get my hands on a 320 of this.

Dooze Jackers Konani EP

Montreal outfit Dooze Jackers first came onto my radar with their song 'Euh!' a collaboration with New York native Wes De Graaf. This teaser for their upcoming EP 'Konani' just popped up on my Soundcloud and by the way this teaser plays out the EP is going to be huge. Expect thumping kick drums and evil synths. My personal favourite would be the Wes De Graaf remix...it packs a serious punch, an honourable mention also goes to the Will Bailey and Punk Rolla remix too.

No release date as yet, however I recommend following them on Soundcloud so you can stay in the loop.

Brostep You Ask?

There seems to be a lot of talk lately on whether or not Dubstep has gone too far in terms of noise for the sake of noise. This has been 'dubbed' (see what I did there) by industry heavyweights including Skream and Rusko as 'Brostep'. Now I'm not going to comment on this debate although I feel as I empathise with both sides on this one, so I'll let you all make up your own mind.

What inspired this post was this great remix that I just found by Dillon Francis. He lists the genre as 'Luvstep' and I think that word best describes it, this is Dubstep that even your Grandma would like. This one is really different, so if you like Dubstep for the noise then it's most probably not for you, however if you like low-fi, uplifting, half-time bliss then this one is a must have. It just seems in a market flooded with the noisiest of noise when something different comes along it really is refreshing and for the moment I can't get enough of it.

DWNTWN - Transition (Dillon Francis Remix) by DILLONFRANCIS

Here is an interesting interview with Rusko regarding 'Brostep'.

Also an interview with Skream expressing his dislike for the 'Brostep' scene. (Around 4:09)

Die Antwoord - Evil Boy

Diplo's known for his versatility when it comes to music and this one is no exception. He takes the production reigns on South African Rap/Punk outfit and current 'it' band Die Antwoord's song 'Evil Boy'. This song is super fun and features some awesomely freaky lyrics by the duo. Below is the filmclip to the video which is fuckin' fantastic.

EVIL BOY from Die Antwoord on Vimeo.

You can pick up the song from iTunes. I highly recommend you do.

Touch & Go (Mixed By Thrusher & Rampant)

Unbeknown to most readers the writers here at Smidgem also lead a double life as DJs, which when you think about it makes a lot of sense and is probably more obvious than Clark Kent when he takes off his glasses. This mix is hot off the press and mixed by Smidgem's very own writers Lucas(Thrusher) and Fin (Rampant). It's an hour of non-stop noise that would be a perfect soundtrack to any night out. This mix spans the genres of electronic music, going through Dubstep, Rave, Brostep and Thrash. This mix is  super fun, super loud and has the potential to make you 'loose your shit' harder than you ever thought possible. Despite it's shit loosing qualities it's guaranteed loads of fun so if you like to party (and I know I do) this is for you...

Dance Music Doco!!

Something a little different today. Heres a doco. that shows how dance music emerged into the mainstream of Germany in the late 80's.Taking you through the stages and fads that alienated a whole generation of youth, this film documents how techno music evolved from its underground beginnings to emerge at the forefront in youth culture.

Most of this is in subtitles, but its interesting and informative enough for that not to worry you.Whether its a rainy day outside or your curled up on the couch, watch this doco and gain some knowledge on the music and lifestyle that might just have you in its grip.

Thrusher

So stoked to be introducing you to Smidgem writer and founder Thrusher (aka Lucas Wilkinson) He has been sending me at least two new tracks/remixes every week now for the last few months. My response every time is basically the same 'mate that is really fucking good hey, I cant wait to play this out.'

Thrusher has been playing around with all genres from house to electro and most recently dubstep. His latest remix he compiles all these in to one massive party tune which could easily be mistaken for a Skrillex remix. BOOOOM!
The build and angry bassline will have you singing 'keep it coming' in no time. Thrusher only really started producing no more than a year ago and to have this original under his belt, wow. Imagine the beats that will be coming in the not to distant future.
Keep It Coming by Thrusher

Here's is his first shot at dubstep. Its a super fun and easily listening sample he used here that soon grows in to a squelchy electronic monster. Very addictive!
Kiss The Sky by Thrusher

Yeah so be sure to head on over to his soundcloud page to keep up to date with all the latest and greatest and I'm sure he would love to hear some feeback.

Nero, La Sape, Skrillex, Diplo Does Sleigh Bells and More!

I seriously think that 2011 is going to be a huge year for electronic music, it seriously feels like I can't click twice without downloading a song that I absolutely love. So today I have a few songs that I've been feelin' lately...some new and some not so much, none the less gold quality is ensured.

Nero, wow what can I say. I first heard these tracks on their essential mix which I seriously think is up there with the best of all time...yep that's right I'm calling it, right now...BAM! There's something about the tracks this duo makes, they just seem to be so real, full and rich, just really well done I guess. In any case these are my two favourite Nero tunes at the moment and once you download them they are sure to be yours too.

I got this one in the inbox today and she's a doozy. Phoenix, Arizona based production duo La Sape re-worked Light Year's smash hit 5 Girls and let me tell you this thing rocks. A thumping kick and a bassline that will make you crap yourself, what more can you ask for?

I was lucky enough to see Sleigh Bells on their recent Australian tour. They seem to be the 'it' sound right now and I must say I'm certainly liking 'it'. Legend of all thing dance Diplo remixes one of their better songs Tell Em and is fucking fantastic. On a weird note I can hear the sample from the Dooze Jackers & Wes De Graaf song Euh! in the background of the build up not sure if it's the same sample or an actual sample of their song...regardless great song.

Honestly Skrillex just can't do wrong. Everything this guy puts out I fuckin' love and this one is no exception. This one uses a vocal sample throughout that I assume is from one of his earlier works back when he was a fairly prolific singer. Really dig the high end main line in this song super fun stuff for sure.

So Kanye dropped his new album, I'm not going to lie I'm a Kanye fan and most definitely a fan of his new album. Now that's all well and good....then Smidgem favourite and bassline master Figure went and did this. I honestly have had this on repeat for the last 2 hours... it's just so feel good yet so bass-y...ahhh...this is an absolute MUST HAVE just plain huge.

I took the liberty of naming this one...

Cyberpunkers

The “Cyberpunkers” project is the child, born in 2006, of the passion for Cyberpunk culture of two young Italian DJ’s. The format aims at giving a fresh start to this style through four different yet connected forms of art: electronic music, fashion, design and photography. An Australian tour has just been announced with Gtronic so keep your eyes peeled for the coming dates as these parties are set to explode!

First up we have their heavy, heavy hitting original.

This is the boys latest remix. Ive had this on repeat since i got it. The 'high bleep' throughout the track is so addictive.
