RIP Bobby Farrel!!!!

Its a sad day in the world of disco music. Bobby Farrel, member of the legendary group Boney M sadly passed away today in a hotel in Russia.

Its one thing to make music, but its another thing to make music that stands over decades and never gets old.He absolutely oozed coolness.

His dancemoves in the Daddy Cool video are still unmatched by anyone to this day.
Sacrifice 3:30 minutes of your time to see what I am talking about.

The Post NY Chill

So this time of year is known for having a few... all leading up to that holy grail of party nights New Years Eve. Most people around the country will be nursing a serious hangover come new years day. Others will be saving themselves for the numerous big name festivals that fall on the 1st of January and some will even be mashing the two together with a lot of chemical help I'm sure. So in the knowledge that at some point following NY festivities you will be feeling under the weather I've complied a few songs and a mixtape on the more chilled out side because I can't imagine anything worse than a grinding dubstep bassline when I'm  paying from the previous nights shenanigans.

First up a great remix of Bag Raiders new single Sunlight. Melbourne producer GLOVES immerses the original with super soft synths, filtered vocals and funky percussion to bring us a down right, feel good song.

Bag Raiders - Sunlight (GLOVES Remix)

It was a terrible tragedy when Ou Est Le Swimming Pool frontman Charles Haddon passed away back in August. I could see a large future for the British synth-pop group. Frankmusik has done a fantastic cover of their original hit 'Dance The Way I feel' which is full of those signature powerful Frank vocals. Southern California trio Fiero up the ante a little on this one with their masterful bootleg.

Fankmusik - Dance The Way I Feel (Fiero Respect Bootleg)

With Breakbot you are just guaranteed a good song and this one is no exception. With top notch vocals from Parisian singer Irfane this one is lo-fi bliss. The Aeroplane remix is also very noteworthy, however you will have to pick that one up at Beatport. (I can't give away everything)

Breakbot - Baby I'm Yours (ft. Irfane)

When I first this song I freaked out. I love the original by Bon Iver and it seems that it became a huge Indie favourite. Das Kapital applys a perfect amount of everything in this re-rub. Perfectly executed drums and a powerful yet somehow distant and appropriate bassline. Combined with the soft vocals of the original this song is truly a masterpiece. I had one of my frequent "this is the best fucking song ever" moments with this one however I think given that over the last few weeks it's accrued a serious number of play in my iT that it's justified.

Bon Iver - Skinny Love (Das Kapital Rerub)

This one is similar to the last as I was also a big fan of the original. Edward Shapre & The Magnetic Zeros  have seen a lot of success in 2010 especially with their song Home. RAC takes an absolutely blissful road with this mix, this song is a definite improvement on the original. You can't help but smile when you listen to this lovely piece of music.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home (RAC Mix)

Last but not least the mixtape. This mixtape would have to be one of my favourite and probably one of my most listened to. Cut Copy usually known for their synth-pop originals have been known to play a DJ set from time to time. They release this mix a few years back and I instantly fell in love. An hour of super cruisy, laid back pad-synth laden awesomeness. This one goes down well where ever and whenever you play it. Cutter are on the verge of releasing their third album and you can preview some of it here.

Cut Copy - So Cosmic

Bonus vids.....NICE!

Rockatronix

This mixtape has been kicking around for a while now but is still one of my favourites. Like I've honestly had it for 3 or 4 years and I still listen to it on a regular basis. Dubby Christmas

5oh! is spreading the christmas cheer in his own way with this awesome bootleg of the Home Alone theme song. One to play at christmas dinner with the family I reckon.

Eleanor Rigby

This would have to be one of my all time favourite Beatles tracks. With songs that kind of go under the label 'classic' I generally dont think that they should be remixed as most of the time its always for the worst. However these two mixes break the rules.

4centers have had over 64000 plays on this edit and its not hard to see why.

The Squire of Gothos just released thier latest EP and it is loaded to the hills with 13 banging remixes from the likes of Kanji Kinetic, DJ Donna Summer, Heaps and loads more.
Dizz from the duo 'Dizz and Draz' (smidgem regulars) remix is the pick of the bunch. The build is super funky, Mr. Oizo himself would be impressed and the drop is pure bassline madness. This is a huge weapon for the DJs.

Dillon Francis

An absolutely fantastic remix by Dillon Francis. Word on the street is that this was set to be an official release on the DJ Fresh EP but Dillon missed the cut. Therefore this beautiful tune is yours free in full 320. This one is a fine example of great sounding Dubstep without the whamp, so if you have friends on the fence about Dubstep show them this and perhaps they'll come around.

Daft Punk - Derezzed

So there's a lot of internet hype about Daft Punk scoring the soundtrack to the new adaptation of Tron. From what I've heard so far it all sound pretty good and very fitting to the theme of the movie.
I stumbled across this today, supposedly it's the film clip for 'Derezzed' however it just looks like a super promo tool. That being said it has me salivating for the movie and for new Daft tunes. Kudos Disney, kudos!

Funkefeller

It's always refreshing to stumble upon a new talent in the electronic scene and I've done just that this morning. US producer Dan Orlando works under the guise of Funkefeller and bases him self out of Phoenix. The production work heard on his Soundcloud is absolutely top notch, bass heavy, teeth grinding amazingness.

He seems to have done a few remixes of Skrillexs new EP with some great results. First up we all know Rock n Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain) is a pretty glitch heavy song as it is, however Funkefeller give it a 'bam' with the spice weasel and turns the volume all the way up to 11 with his remix.

Skrillex - Rock n Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain) [Funkefeller Remix]

Continuing with the Skrillex remixes, Funkefeller turns the title track Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites inside out. Keeping it at Dubstep tempo whilst including a 4/4 kick for that extra 'rave' feel. The synths have had the shit chopped outta them and he's kept the original vocal sample which is a huge plus. Straight up I fuckin' love this song.

Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Funkefeller Rave Mix)

Scaling back the tempo again Funkefeller has a stab at Deadmau5's single Sofi Needs A Ladder. Deadmau5 changed the time signature in the build up which I assume would have thrown a lot of people off with electro being 4/4 across the board. Have a listen at the start to the time signature change. This one probably isn't a song for your average DJ as it will probably lead to a mangled beat mess when the sig changes.

Deadmau5 - Sofi Needs A Ladder (Funkefeller Remix)

You should also head over to his Souncloud page for some more bass-y goodness.

Boy 8-Bit's Back!

Call him a metalhead, call him a ranga, call him whatever you like I call him one of the better producers out there and one of my personal favourite. This is just joyous to listen to, if someone told me god made this track I would probably start going to chruch. (Most definitely wouldn't.)

Eric Prydz (Pryda) - Niton (Boy 8-Bit Remix) 128kbps

The remix EP is due for release in the new year, I for one can not wait to get my hands on the 320.

BeatauCue Monthly Mix #2

Not much to say here. BeatauCue just released their December mixtape and just like the last one it's a true aural journey.

No Brain

Etienne De Crecy has just dropped his latest single 'No Brain'. After hearing this on the floor I'm sure we'd all be walking out a little more braindead. With deep driving electro/tech this reminds me of a Soulwax edit. Its being released with a bunch of remixes by the likes of Nobody Beats The Drum, Serge Santiago, Munk, The Disco Villians and Smidgem favourite Tai.

Style - What So? Not Remix

Sydneysider and part-time Smidgem contributor Elmo Is Dead has teamed up with fellow Sydney local HEDS to form What So? Not. They have some cool little numbers up on their Soundcloud including an upcoming remix for Smidgem favourites Peking Duk's new EP. A far cry from the original however still extremely funktastic.

Peking Duck - Style (What So Not Remix)(UNMASTERED) by What So? Not

Whomp!

Im not one to post alot of Dubstep, personally its not my cup of tea. But this one here is an exception. Loving the double bass kicks, I think they are getting in touch with my old love for death metal. If I ever join the army and to go to war, this one is going to be on repeat inside the tank!

Krafty Kuts - Triple J mix

So as most of you are aware 'the man' Krafty Kuts is in the country. He is one of the pioneers of the whole breakbeat scene, way back in the day when glowsticks where available over the bar.
Since then Krafty has been putting his finishing touches to almost every track he plays with his unique 're-rubs' which basically just lays a breakbeat behind some of the biggest electro tracks going round, rendering them much more danceable. Just take a listen/download this mixtape and you'll hear what I mean..

Hello

A few songs for you today.Frist comes a Booka Shade remix from techno guru Popof. He took a hiatus for a while but over the last few months he has been pumping out some wicked jams.
Shit gets creepy in at around 3 minutes then comes in a haunting female voice that delivers you to a hypnotic rolling beat that will only suffice on LOUD speakers. Groove!

And here is a relatively new one from Parisian Mikix The Cat(or as his more techy alter ego Mommas Boy). Now when your talking diversity you cant get much better than the Trouble And Bass native. His new track "Girls" is like getting 4 seasons in one day.Just give it a listen and you will know what I mean.Dude has skills, expect a feature post soon!!

Skrillex - Bruno Mars

I first heard this one in BeatauCues november mix and since then it has been a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Skrillex, usually known for his glitchy dubstep productions takes a very mainstream approach with this one with some confusing results. I can imagine a DJ at a trendy LA nightspot playing this after a Madonna song and fist pumpin' the crap outta it. I mean... I hate everything this track stands for but for some reason can't stop listening to it. If all else this thing is a floor filler and if you mouth the lyrics you will most probably get laid. Bruno Mars is most likely a 'Batty Boi' so the remix is aptly named.

The Soundcloud Roundup #2

So I delved deep into the world of Soundcloud again. Read below, awesomeness ensues.

First up is a tune by Sydneysider Caleb Crinis working under the guise of Narrator. Judging by the tunes on his page this guy is set for big things. A lot of funky stuff which is also very unique. This one is probably my favourite out of the bunch however there's some other gold on his page and it's well worth checking out. His track Move Yo Feet can also be found in Beat The Weekend Pt. 7.

Backyard Betty (Original Mix) - Narrator & Ruslan by Narrator

UK natives Zombie Disco Squad have a plethora of his in today's dance music scene and this one is no exception. Nice drums and just straight up funk-eh.

Zombie Disco Squad - Hobo by ZDS

If you don't already know Daft Punk have done a new track for the upcoming release of Tron Legacy. The original is pretty cool, however L.A based brothers Matt & Josh David or Breakdown have made it pretty cooler. The production level on this is insane, it's just great to listen to.

Daft Punk - Derezzed (Breakdown Remix) by Breakdown

I mentioned in a recent post the release of Bart B More and Tommie Sunshines 'Drop Acid' and the great job Figure did remixing it. Well I have to say Will Bailey has done just as good if not better with this one.

BART B MORE AND TOMMIE SUNSHINE - DROP ACID [WILL BAILEY REMIX] *** OUT NOW *** by Will Bailey

I heard this one a while ago but it's still dope. Great little number by LA Riots tuba sample and all.

LA Riots - Control Your Tuba Clip by LA Riots

Canadian producer Barletta caused a bit of a stir a while back with his amzing bootlegs of mainstream pop songs. He's made a foray into Dubstep with this one and has definitely succeded.

That's all folks....until next time!

Zombie

Subvert reworks The Cranberries classic tune 'zombie'
This is HUGE.! He recently closed down his set at Shambala with this weapon.

12th Planet

12th Planet is a producer most well known as the head honcho of Smog Records out in LA, California. A well respected DJ in his own right and a firm favourite with the likes of Breakage, Skream, Jack Beats and Rusko. He was just in Australia last week and smashed up clubs all around the country. Brrrat!

It seems to be all about the collabs of late. It also seems to be working...well. Steve Aoki and Armand Van Helden teamed up to release Brrrat! about a month ago and I must admit that I didn't really get down on the original. However this latest remix EP has some serious awesomeness to it. With remixes from dance heavyweight Bart B More and Beataucue along with a slew of other bangers this thing is well worth the buy. Not to sure when us Aussies will be able to pick it up as it's restricted to 'not us' at the moment but it's so sick it's worth the wait! (But head on over to Beatport any way for a squiz at all the tracks)

Beataucues take on this one is a far cry from their most recent release Disque Oh! and I mean that in the best way possible... I first heard this in their most recent monthly mixtape and was blown away. This thing builds and builds and builds.......then explodes...check it!

I'll Show You Bass and Brooklyn Fire

It's been a big week for bass heavyweight Figure. First up his new release "I'll Show You Bass" EP on Calvertrons Jack Knife Records is a heavy hitter and has amassed a large amount of positive feedback on Soundcloud. But even bigger news is the forming of Brooklyn Fire Records, a collab of Figure and dance music royalty Tommie Sunshine. Figure also made a theme for the labels launch which features his signature bassline. Oh shit and more Figure related news...his remix of the Tommie Sunshine and Bart B More track 'Drop Acid' was also recently release, and it's a doozy.
