One of the most innovative names in the often-stagnant electro-techno sphere, Gesaffelstein – real name Mike Levy – keeps a relatively low-profile, with only a handful of releases (most recently on Tiga’s Turbo label) but when they hit as hard as the frantic, lasered pulse of ‘Variations’ or the swirling, Hacker-esque ‘Selected Faces’, a handful is all you need.
These two here have been on constant replay, i honestly cannot get enough of them!
Its so good to hear some fresh beats from Foamo cause it had honestly been way too long between tracks. I guess he must of just locked himself in his studio and went to town. The last few he has released have been in kind of a different direction to his earlier stuff but I'm really feeling it.
My boy Thrusher took it upon himself to remix Celestial. Love the fact that he kept a lot of the percussion throughout the track but as per usual he tweaked the hell out of it for a much more aggresive version than the original.
I just got pointed towards these boys the other day. Night Riot are two young guys from Sydney who have only been producing for 4 months and already have a very unique sound. Expect to hear loads more from this duo in the very near future..

With support from Radio One’s Kissy Sellout & Jaymo & Andy George, as well as a recent guest mix on the Annie Nightingale show. Jay’s productions have found their way into the sets and playlists of some of the world’s biggest names, with Armand Van Helden, Moby, Fake Blood, Laidback Luke & Herve all regularly championing his tracks.
Here is his latest 'clubstep' banger. Totally reworked Missy Elliots classic track Lick Shots.
Definitely not dry July! I have never seen more rain in my life than what we've had in the last week. But the snow is good & the surf consistent so no frowns to be found here
Today I'd like to share with you some gem's of mine. I've been sitting on these tracks for a number of months & see that no one from the Smidgem family has yet given them a mention
I'm pretty noob on these dubstep sub genres, I guess you'd call this chillstep?
First is one from the amazing 'Gold Panda', with 'Star Slinger' on the Remix The original is a beautiful piece, comprising of glitchy looped pads, counter melodies & a wicked Shamisen sample. I guess you'd class it as some form of electronica/deep house hybrid
Star Slinger ramps up the bpm, adds a tight 909 kit & big hoover synth It's just nice to hear 'dub' with melody & a focus on musicality rather than gurn inducing noises
Next up we have 'Choose Me' by 'Xilent' (Which apparently is pronounced "Excillent"?) It's huge atm, I've been seeing it pop up everywhere.
This one is also very melodic & euphoric (almost trancey? But not lame trancey, more 'Blitz - Digitalism' trancey) A little tuffer than the star Slinger track, they perfectly sneak in a couple of LFO wobbs, giving it a lot of punch & energy, without over doing it
Finally, the epicly chilled 'Phonat' mix of 'Skrillex's' - 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites' Far separated from the original, Phonat has chopped/transposed Sony's vocal, layered glittery chimes & pads & ended up with a masterpiece of electronica. Nice use of a heavy sidechain on the sustained elements also gives the track a lot of bounce
These 2 guys have been tearing club walls down for a few years now forming back in 2009, these guys prove with this mix that there is no slowing down. Its full of throbbing bass and a bunch of originals and remixes. Also be sure to check their soundcloud to get in the know...
Yet another mixtape, there are just so many out there right now and I'm feeling the need to share a bunch with all you loyal Smidgem readers. I can't hear anyone complaining... Here is the superb Radio Jam session with Tiga on BBC Radio 6 Music Mix
Check out this teaser mix of three original tracks from a new EP Modek has been working on. Plenty of bass you wouldnt expect anything less from belgium bass addict. Not sure on the drop date but stay tuned it will be massive..
Calvertron is the latest to get involved in The Fat! Club mix series, with a suitably bonkers mix from arguably one of the most versatile producers in town. Jantsen, Skrillex, AFK, Eddie K & Minus are some of the names hurled into the 30 track mix, alongside his own remixes for the likes of Rack N Ruin, Figure and FS & Reidspeed. The Fat! Club Mix 021 - Calvertron by Fat! Records
Any of the above names would be acceptable when describing Caleb Crinis but he likes to go under the guise of Narrator. If you have been following Smidgem for a while then no doubt you have also been following the progression of Narrator as he has been featured over and over in these pages. So it was kind of a no brainer to ask him to step up to the plate for our third guestmix.
He compiled the tracklist mostly with his own bootlegs and borrowed a couple of his good mate Ruslan for good measure. Right out of the gates this mix is fucking banging!! Filled with high energy electro with some insane breakdowns that will instantly put the cheesiest grin on your face. This has been getting some serious play around the Smidgem office already and I'm very hounered to be able to share this with the world. Be sure to show our boy some love on his soundcloud and follow him to stay up to date with all his latest and greatest.
*Rinse Out, The Whistle Song, Mumps (Narrator Bootleg) *Beat Gon Boom & Lose Control (Narrator Bootleg) *Lip Gloss - Lil Mama (Narrator & Ruslan Remix) [narrators no breakdown edit] *Everybody Shakes it in Zzafrica (Ruslan Bootleg) *This is Sick, Dont Stop (Narrator Bootleg) *Awesomeness (Original Mix) - Narrator *Take Over Control, Behold (Narrator Bootleg) *My Neck My Bounce (Narrator Bootleg) *Boys Will Be Boys, If You Seek Amy (Narrator Bootleg) *Awooga, Chase The Sun, Cool (Narrator Bootleg) *Music Sounds Better With Traction (Narrator Bootleg) *Get Some (Original Mix) - Narrator & Ruslan *Switch, Transient (Narrator Bootleg)
*Drop It Low (Original Mix) Narrator & Ruslan
Being the nice guy that he is Caleb is giving out all of these bootlegs in a zip file that you can grab right here. What a legend!!
This is his latest single that has been murdering the dance floor all across the country. There are a whole bunch of remixes on the way soon so sit tight!
About a month or so ago Jimmy introduced me to an artist by the name of Alvin Risk. Since then I have scoured the net for every track that has his name attached and the other day I found this gem. I can only expect massive things from this guy in the future, so as always "look out for him" (I know you will...probably)
SKEPTIKS have exploded onto the scene in a big way with their latest EP Cobwebs/Under the Bed being featured on UKF. This mix is MASSIVE earporn at it's best just look at the tracklist and try wipe that smile from your face.

Stevie Nicks. If the name doesnt ring a bell , then the voice damn well should. ........... If not ,maybe the name Fleetwood Mac does. Othwerwise go fuck yourself with something wrapped in barbed wire.
Everyone here at Smidgem has been straight frothin' on Moombahton of late, and for good reason, this shit ROCKS! The brainchild of dance heavyweight and one half of Nadastrom Dave Nada, Moombahton is taking the world by storm. What is Moombahton you ask? Well essentially it's dutch house at 110bpm which is Reggaeton speed, it takes elements from all genres and has already spawned sub genres (Moombahcore anyone?). Now to my point. Smidgem contributor is not only a great fella with a top notch musical knowledge he's also masterful DJ and has whipped up a fucking awesome Moombaton mixtape for ya'll that will have your party shakin' their booties in no time. If you're unsure of Moombaton this mix contains the cream of the crop so get on the download and get the party started!!!!!!!!
